Building REsources - San Francisco's building materials recycler and source for artists and contractors

A potential supplier for your artistic endeavors? We'll be visiting soon, and we'll be taking pictures.

From their site:

Building REsources is San Francisco's only source for reusable and recycled building materials. We are a source of inspiration for artists and contractors alike, as well as a place to donate tax deductible material from building and demolition.

A unique mix of old-fashioned junkyard and ongoing art installation, Building REsources offers a huge selection of material to the community at great prices.

We owe our uniqueness to the fact that we are the only salvage yard supplied exclusively with donations from the community.

We'll let you know what we find...but it sounds way cool no matter what.

N E M O M A T I C

Our pal and kinetic sculptor, Nemo Gould, has just let us know:

Anyone living in the San Francisco Bay area who wants another chance to see the monumental kinetic sculpture "Detritus Ascending" can do so in the front window of the ACCI gallery from April 26- June 6. There will be a reception for all of us participating in the group show "Flora & Fauna" on May 14th from 6-8 pm

ACCI Gallery - 1652 Shattuck Ave. in Berkeley, CA.

Someone from KineticWorld will be there (for the free nibbles and wine, no doubt) Come see the art...and say hi if you see one of us there.

Open Body is one of the many examples of exciting, interactive work created by Tiffany Holmes. Using the familiar childhood game of Operation, this piece engages the audience to think about the experience of a patient in a hospital.

NEC Develops Fastest Rechargeable Battery

I just found this link over at WorldChanging.com about these new batteries NEC is working on. This is very exciting news for any of us who build battery powered art. I could even envision their use in places where we might otherwise use a large electrolytic capacitor.

Anyway, read on...

NEC Corp has developed a battery that can be recharged only in 30 seconds, company sources said. Called an organic radical battery, it can be recharged to the same level of power as that stored in nickel-hydrogen cells, which are widely used in digital cameras, portable MD players and other electronic devices.

It takes only about 30 seconds to recharge the battery enough to allow 80 hours of continuous operation of an MD player, compared with around an hour needed by conventional rechargeables, the company claims.

Because of its ability to recharge faster, the new battery, which stores power in a special resin, is expected to make radio-controlled toy cars, shavers and other products much more convenient to use.

The battery can also discharge power in a short time, making it useful in applications requiring a large amount of power.

Genetic algorithms have often been applied to computer graphics to achieve spectacular effects such as Electric Sheep, designed by Scott Draves, featuring animated graphics that grow and mutate over time.

Eduardo Kac goes one step further, bringing genetic manipulation directly into his art. Currently being shown at the Exploratorium is Move 36 which features a plant spliced with custom genes with the phrase "Cogito ergo sum", translated as "I think therefore I am".

Phillip K. Dick would be proud.

Remember your history. Nam June Paik, for those who don't know , is one of the most brilliant installation artists with elegant yet poignant works such as the Video Flag and TV Cello. In the 1960s, he began using the ubiquitous television set as theme in his works, but has also delved into the realm of robotics.
